Haleakala Sunrise

Haleakala crater on Maui is home to one of the most unique landscapes on the planet, complete with towering cindercones, red and black sand, and wide open views. Thousands of people get up hours before sunrise for a long drive up the slopes of Haleakala to witness the event. You can't predict the weather. I got a ride to the top with my bike along with two friends. We completely lucked out. We got the awesome sunrise with visibility to the big island peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Then we got clear views of the Haleakala crater itself. Finally, we had excellent weather for the ~38 mile high speed ride down from 10,000 feet to sea level.

Haleakala "Crater," sitting at 10,023 feet above sea level, is the deep pit at the top of one of the dormant volcanoes that formed Maui. It is not a true crater since it was formed by erosion, but it has the shape of a huge crater, it looks like something you would find on the moon, and the name has stuck for many years. Haleakala (literally "House of the Sun") is a top destination in Maui. Couple fun facts: The crater has a circumference of 21 miles; You could fit the island of Manhattan within the crater; The air at Haleakala’s summit has about 20% less oxygen than the air at sea level; The Apollo Astronauts trained at Mount Haleakala. I've seen lots of the world, mostly in the Pacific and Asia, Between the sunrise, crater views and bike ride down, Haleakala was just about the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.

Haleakala Bike Ride

Riding down from 10,000+ feet to sea level in 38 miles means a pretty steep rode. Me and two shipmates off the USS Worden did it and I don't think we pedaled once. We had jackets on at the top and shorts and t-shirts by the time we hit the bottom. I had a bike with cargo carriers so could haul all our stuff. Not a lot of pictures from the ride down since we were more worried about staying alive.

I've seen a lot of the world and I've dove a lot of it too. Philippines, Guam, Maldives amongst others. Molokini is a touristy dive but a good one and great for photos. Paid maybe $75 bucks for a spot on this guys boat and he took us to a couple easy spots since we had some rookie divers. A better more advanced dive would be the back wall of the crater which descends to 400 feet. Even better would be the back wall at night with a spear gun! But if they allowed spear fishing the pretty little fish wouldn't be there for you to feed and photograph.

Shots above include various scenic spots on Maui. All but the sunrise at the end were taken as we rode around on bikes.
