Muir Woods, Alcatraz Island

From Universal City to San Francisco

Took the advice of a friend who had just been in the Bay Area dealing with mudslides and stayed away from the coastal roads. If you cut right through California north in I5 you go right through farm country and it's pretty green and flat all the way. Roads were in great shape and a very pleasant drive until you hit the construction of Oakland and San Francisco.

Tim had been to Muir Woods in the late 70's when he was going to Navy schools in Mare Island. In fact for the six months he was there he spent most of his weekends in San Francisco. So we figured arrive in the bay area around noon, go straight to the woods and then double back to our hotel on Fisherman's Wharf. After the various theme parks it was nice for the kids to take a break with a natural land mark which happen to be the tallest trees in the world. It's a beautiful drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and then up into the hills which house the woods.

We all enjoyed the cruise to Alcatraz and the island tour itself. The island is a big bird sanctuary now. The whole place is in pretty poor repair which is surprising since the tours run non-stop and are sold out every day. Glad to see the prisoners had a tough life on the "Rock"
Wish modern prisons were this hard.
