Vacation 2007 - Page 2

Corpus Christi

Corpus is home to a number of popular destinations. There's a wildlife refuge on the western shore of Oso Bay. A nearby golf course serves as a haven for coastal and migratory birds. Some of the most visited attractions are on North Beach, where the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay are located. Nearby is Corpus Christi's museum district. Located there are the Museum of Asian Cultures, Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the South Texas Institute for the Arts. The downtown area is home to skyscrapers, companies, various shops and a very popular center of marinas. Directly east of Corpus Christi are Padre Island and Mustang Island, Padre Island being Texas' version of Daytona Beach when it comes to spring break.  The area is a jump off point for bay and open ocean fishing too.  We stayed at the Radisson Hotel right on the Corpus Christi Beach. The view was great, water was warm and we all had a blast.

First night in town we ate at the Water Street Seafood Company & Oyster Bar. Excellent food, everything fresh. The kids ate a monster platter of fresh oysters, even Jillian tried them. The blackened red fish is a must have.  Prices a bit high but you're in a tourist spot.

Below are various shots from our hotel room balcony and from driving and walking around, along with shots from the USS Lexington. Obviously the Lexington is the standout attraction. You can spend a day onboard and not see everything. We have a separate web page on just the Lexington.  The Texas State Aquarium is nice as is the Science Museum which includes full scale replicas of Christopher Columbus's ships. Unbelievable they sailed those little things across the Atlantic 500 years ago.

When in Corpus Christi make time for dinner at Landry's Seafood House. They offer a menu full of excellent seafood entrees and a great selection of appetizers and desserts. However, despite the excellent food, it is the location and ambience that makes Landry's stand out. Set on a refurbished passenger barge, the restaurant is charming and quaint and offers an unparalleled view of Corpus Christi Bay. From the restaurant you can stroll through the marina, where moored sailboats, fishing boats and yachts make for great sight-seeing.
